I'm looking for a book to use as a textbook for an online Gospels class. Here are my requirements:

1) It must give a relatively detailed overview/harmony of the Gospels in one volume.
2) It must be readily available for purchase (not out of print).
3) It must be theologically sound. That is not to say that we must agree with its entire contents, but the vast majority.

These are options I am considering, but am looking for other recommendations. (Especially if there is a book meeting the above requirements by a sound Baptist writer.)

The Words and Works of Jesus Christ, J. Dwight Pentecost
The Christ of the Gospels, J.W. Shepherd
A Short Life of Christ, Everett F. Harrison

I have used Pentecost's book and I recommend it. As you mentioned, you won't agree with everything in it, but it is very good. He gives a harmony of the Gospels with some commentary, including quotes from scholarly works. It is one volume but is more than just a bare harmony like A. T. Robertson's for example.

Pink's "Four Views of Christ" is very good, but it is not really a harmony proper.

Thanks Bro. Jeff ... I'm leaning toward using Pentecost's book right now. Just looking for another option since it is quite extensive reading and might be a little overwhelming for the student who are also expected to read the Gospels several times during the semester. (The Gospels, of course, are our main textbooks!)

Isn't there a "condensed" version of Pentecost's book?

Yep. There is ... and I've got it ordered so I can review it in case it will work.

Bro. Short, are you familiar enough with the abridged version to give a recommendation? (See, I know how to speel recommendation, despite what the post heading says!)

No, unfortunately, I don't know anything about it other than thinking it existed. Having gone through the full volume rather extensively, I could see where it could be condensed and still be useful. But I don't know what they did with this book.

A couple of other possibilities:

"A Historical Harmony of the Gospels" by Robert Sargent (Independent Baptist of high Arminian variety)

"Analytical Red Letter Harmony of the Four Gospels" by Floyd Nolen Jones (Scholar and Southern Baptist)\

I have Jones' book and some of his other works. I can recommend them as good. Most people are familiar with Jones' Bible Chronology, which is a must-have. I recommended it on here a while back, but I don't remember the thread. I have not used Sargent's material, but have had others recommend them to me.

I'll check them out.

Got the "abridged" version of Pentecost's book from Amazon today (used). It has no commentary at all. It is merely a harmony of the Gospels using *cough* the NV text. Ugh! Not what I was hoping for.

I think the last two books I mentioned use the KJV text.

Sargent's harmony works together with a study he prints on the life of Jesus. I haven't personally seen these, but they seem interesting.
